On 12 October 2015, Federal Councillor Johann Schneider-Ammann visited ETH Zurich. During the visit, which was themed Digitalisation – Opportunities for Research and Industry, professors, junior researchers and apprentices gave the economy minister a tour of the entire value creation chain, from basic research to industrial application. One of the highlights of the programme was a visit to the robotic manufacturing laboratory of the NCCR Digital Fabrication where an interdisciplinary research team led by Jonas Buchli, Fabio Gramazio and Matthias Kohler demonstrated the “In-situ Fabricator” construction robot. The economy minister and former head of a mechanical engineering company was suitably impressed: “We have been talking about this for decades. It seems that the time for a successful breakthrough has now come.”
